I am curious how this effect is created. Is there a thread on this or am I missing something hopelessly simple in the object properties?

See attached...

UFO!

looks like the new glow effect, it's in the textures tab

either that or a particle effect, hard to tell (the screen on my work computer is borked, actually its the graphics card, makes everything look very dark)

Well, I've been playing w/the glow effects but I don't seem to get that lens flare.

Is that coming from a glowing stripe on the wall or something? It looks like simply a round particle, similar to the default particle

To me, it looks there are two different effects in play there. One is what appears to be a couple of very intense specular highlights, the big one that runs across the middle of the canvas, and another across the top. The other is the radial effect that looks like it could be some sort of lens flare.

Is the image a screenshot of something you saw in-world, or is it simply a picture you happend across? If it was in-world, did the effects seem to behave dynamically, or was it more like they were painted into a texture?

If it behaved dynamically, then my guess is it's a combination of glow and a particle effect. The apparent specular highlight (which would have looked more like a light than a highlight in-world) would be the glow, and the radial flare would be the particle.

If was just part of a picture though, then there are about a thousand ways it could have been created. Highlights like that can be acheived very easily, simply by narrowing the input levels of the image (In Photoshop, click Image -> Adjustments -> Levels, and then in the Input Levels section, drag the white stop leftward). The radial flaring could have been generated by a filter, or from a couple of gradients, or it could have been painted by hand.

Both effects also could have been rendered from a 3D modeling application.

any chance of giving a location, I just noticed what may appear to be a reflection at the top, if it is I would think this just could be a texture?
