I have been working with sculpties for quite a while now in maya and have been texturing in photoshop so far, however this takes a lot of time because of the stretching in texture that can occur with sculpted prims.

I was hoping someone might know a way to paint the sculpties in 3D or the Nurbs Surface.

As for those thinking of somato, I tried the trial and the inability to stretch the shape to what the real sculpty would eventually look like instead to being bound to a square measurement.

If you want to paint directly on the NURBS model, you can use Maya's texture painting tools. They're pretty basic, but they do work well for what they are.

Another option is to convert the model to polys, and then paint on it a more full-featured 3D paint program, like Photoshop CS4 Extended, or Deep Paint 3D. Just be sure the UV map remains intact when you convert. Remember, it must be absolutely uniform. Be prepared to fix it if necessary.

And of course, there are alternatives to painting. Maya's procedural texturing tools are incredibly powerful, and projections can do wonders. Careful lighting also makes an incredible difference. Baking is a beautiful thing.

I use Blender with Domino's scripts to create (or import) a sculpt, and then export it as a .obj file. I then use Photoshop CS4 and open the .obj and draw the outlines of my design directly on it. I then texture it based on the "template" I drew on the model. This is the easiest and most fun way I've found to texture sculpts.

ZBrush and Modo are also capable of painting/projecting on the model and baking a texture that conforms to the sculpt UV.

An inexpensive option is the Blacksmith suite:

For some reason, I recalled it having a free version, but looking at the website, it looks as if it costs about $100. Still, that's much less than Zbrush or Photoshop CS4, and probably a good option if all you want is painting capabilities.
