Using Daz Studio to preview Gimp clothes

I'm using Gimp to make clothes (i.e. practicing), but I'm not able to import them to Daz Studio, because Daz doesn't read any of the file types Gimp can save as. It should understand *obj, for example, but I can't find it in "save as". (Or is it that it can only read those types?)

I do the saving "by extension", but there is no *obj, or any other DAZ-able file type. Does someone have info on how to accomplish importing Gimp pics to Daz studio?

Btw. Thanks Tod for writing the great post on using Gimp :) And thanks Jennifer for organising a great basic course on making clothes, it was really useful :)

Read this thread, if you haven’t done so, for instructions on getting SL’s avatar into DAZ Studios and getting your clothing onto the model.

You must same your clothing article as a TIF file. Then you click on upper or lower body and use Browse for Files to fine the tif file.

Mia, I think you might be confusing two things here.

The Gimp is a 2D program, and saves as various 2D file types. (I'm not sure which ones, since I don't use it, but I understand that it saves most of them.)

You won't be able to "open" any 2D file types in DAZ Studio, because it's a 3D program, and only opens 3D file types. In other words, at the "Open" level it's looking for meshes, (3D objects,) not textures (2D.)

However, as Jen said, you can use the 2D file types (.tif is your best choice) to preview the clothing as a Texture on something, once you have Opened an object (the SL Avatar, in our case.)

Does that make it any clearer?

Thanks, Robin, that made it perfectly clear! Now that you told me it was because it's 2D vs. 3D, no wonder, I just didn't realize it. I'll try the .tif- solution, as Jennifer suggested. I did open the avatar in DAZ, now I know that i need to go with texturing it. Thank you Robin and Jennifer for clearing it up :)

Btw. Jennifer's link doesn't work on my comp :(

Yeah, you’re right. Mine either???

Oh well, use the search box on the top right and type in DAZ Studios.
You are looking for a thread called, Help on DAZ/Poser for skinning.

Just now it was the second thread, yours being the first. It is a thread on opening the SL avatar in Poser and DAZ
Studios. It also discusses getting clothing on the SL model.

Thank you Jen!!!! I really should use the "Search" more often, instead of asking first :p Well, live and learn...

Cool, Mia! Yeah, it's always easier to understand stuff when you know what's really going on.

Jen, you might want to make sure that you didn't accidentally use the link function to link the text of that URL to a partial URL address.

When I click on it, the stuff in the URL bar starts with "showthread", but when I copied and pasted the entire line, it worked just fine. :D

Anyway, for anyone else who's looking, the thread that Jen mentioned is

/109/20/78145/1.html

(I removed the part that highlights the word "Studios". ;) )

Hope this helps!
