Is there a benefit to using .tga files rather than .jpg for your sale posters / ads? What would be a recommendation for crisp, clean and least lag inducing?

I think they are all converted to the same file format when they are uploaded, so the file type doesn't matter, unless you want to include alpha which means you need TGA..

I think what makes the difference is the size, and whats reccomended is 512X512..

if you upload images in jpg format they tend to res abit quicker ... altho if you overdo the compression they look like garbage

There are certain things that you can do with tga that you can't with jpg. Transparancies for one. Alpha channels.

Basically if I design clothing with tga. I use jpg for my signs and posters that don't require transparencies.

Man, we really need stickies on this forum. Okay, here's the deal (again). Don't use jpeg. It's a lossy, extremely low quality format meant to be used on web pages where file size and transfer speed are more important that image quality. Targa (TGA) on the other hand is the most commonly used format used for texturing for 3D. It's high quality, uncompressed, completely lossless, and it supports transparency, none of which can be said for jpeg.

If you're a web designer, use jpeg all day long. If you're a 3D digital artist (which is what you are in SL) then use tga, always.

For what it's worth, my personal theory is that the only reason SL even supports jpeg at all is because so many people lift images from the web. I can't think of any other reason. It's really a terrible format.

Once an image is uploaded to SL, it stored on the server as jpeg2000, a very high quality, virtually lossless compressed format, so don't worry about the fact that targas are huge. A jpeg2000 coming from a tga won't be any bigger than a jpeg2000 from a jpeg. It'll take a little longer to upload initially, but once it's in SL the rezzing speed will be exactly the same either way. It'll just look and function a million times better if it's from a TGA than from a jpeg.
