Does anyone have the texture of LL's shinyness? Not just black-white gradiant, but the actual fake shiny texture?

Is there an actual texture overlay? I always thoguht it was a specular effect.

It's just the plain shiny texture to make things look shiny for people without shiny turned on.

I'm confused what you're asking for. Making different objects appear shiny with a baked faux shine texture is a highly variable process, depending entirely on the shape of the particular object you want to "shine". There's no way to universally apply a single texture to everything and make it look right. Could you perhaps attach a snapshot of an object that has the type of effect you're looking for so I can better understand what you want? I'll be happy to help if I can.

Just a cylindrical object like a pipe.

It is always a good idea to teture anything you make shiny with a low resolution texture just so non shiny people don't see it as a matte color ruining your objects effect totally.

Interesting...

I completely understand why people turn off local lighting but I've found turning off shiny makes little or no difference. I run on a 15" G4 PowerBook which is by no means a great machine for SL but I keep shiny on because

- a) turning it off makes no noticeable difference

- b) I miss so much with it off.

As I make many shiny items I'd like to know what other peoples experience really are ...

Having "shiny" enabled, brings more depth to the overall surroundings.

Thanks for post about the texture, and the code snippet, I am sure this will come in handy one day :)

Tried moving the psudo-specular texture to adapt to the direction of incoming environmental light? It would seem really easy for simple shapes like pipes.

What does the code do that I can't by just selecting the texture when building?

It's just in case you dont have the texture in your inventory or dont want to upload it.

for me the shiny gradient is one of the most clever ideas. I've been working on various way to get special effects in SL without having to utilize the options SL gave us due to the fact ppl tend to squawk over it in time.

I came up with a reflective glass effect that I'm extremely pleased with by taking various pics of the surrounding skylines in both day and night. i posted an example on a globe

HERE

The 'shiny' objects option checked as on tends to lag me personally so i'm glad I can disguise flat and transparent textures as shiny for an option as well as reflection. HTe more clever the better
