Hi,
I would like to apply a tartan texture I have (png format) to some large text in Photoshop CS2. Is this possible? If so, how?
TIA

There are many ways to do this. Here's one:
1. Open your tartan image.
2. Create some text over the top of it. Do this by grabbing the text tool from the tool box, and then click somewhere on the canvas with it. A new text layer will be created. Type whatever you want, and then press ctrl-enter to finish.
3. Use the text to form a selection. Do this by ctrl-clicking on the text layer's thumbnail in the layers palette.
4. Use the selection to copy a portion of the background. First, turn off visibility on the text layer by clicking the little eyeball icon to the left of its thumbnail. Now click once on the background layer (or whatever layer your tartan image is on) to activate it, and then press ctrl-J to copy the selection to a new layer. Turn off visibility on the background layer, and you'll see just the new layer, with the "text" on it, as copied from the tartan pattern.
The above should take you all of about 10 seconds. Again, this isn't the only way to do it. There are literally hundreds of methods you could employ.
