Before I had spent the money to rent a place I would have spent a little time learning how SL works, learn to build some things, learn to texture the things I made and even how to do some basic scripts. Then I would have built some things, textured them and script anything that needed scripting, waiting until I had enough finished objects in my inventory to fill a store.

But that is just me ;)

Go to the IVORY TOWER OF PRIMS (search to find it).
It's free and will teach you basic building.
It'll point you to a free TEXTURE class.
And It'll point you to a free PARTICLES class.

There are also free Script classes...but if you are new to programming, I'd hold off on those awhile.

With that as background, spend a little time in SL. Wander around and TRY things to see how they work. then decide what you want to sell. YOu don't have to build the items yourself--though that's fun. YOu can RESELL someone else's stuff. (usually by either 'renting' them space in your store, or by letting them place a vending machine that gives you a percentage of sales.

You upload your own JPG files with the FILE menu command. They will be in your inventory as 'Textures'. YOu put the Textures on your SIGN object. (see the first 3 lines, above)
