Could someone suggest a general strategy for creating stubble for a bald head without modifying a skin to do it (since that's not an option in this case)?
I'm happy to tinker with it on my own, but I'd just as leave stick to clothing at this point, so pointers to something ready-made are equally welcome.
But if I'm to create one myself, I just don't quite know where to begin. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Shaved heads

Funny
I started thinking about this issue last week when I shaved my head in RL... So far, I got nothing that isn't part of the skin. If someone else has an idea, or has something that is in production, I'd love to talk about it.

If I undertsand correctly, you want to create a layer for the tattoo slot that will overlay the default skin on the head. That is not problem with 32 bit TGA, but you will run into some problem areas around seems where the face meets the upper forehead, and around the front of the ears where side burns usually go. Seem matching can be a challenge in those areas especially if you are dealing with textures such as stubble. Resolution will change dramatically from one side of the seem to the other. For example, stubble will look fantastic extended over to the face side of the seem because of higher resolution, but stubble around parts of the ear can be fuzzy looking at best because of the distortion there. I find it is best to compromise some of the detail in the area of higher resolution to get a better seem match. It dosn't have to be a lot, just enough to soften the edge. Stubble on and around the top and back portion of the head is best simulated with a noise type filter in Photoshop. The final texture probably won't need to be any more than 10% on the opacity scale.

I know someone who has complained and wished for this very thing. If anyone actually creates it I'd like to know about it for him.

In thinking about this more today, I may just "punt" and go make myself a baseball cap and be done with it. To Namssor's point, it's going to require a lot of trial and error and actual uploads to get this even remotely right, and I'm not sure I'm prepared to dump a few hundred Lindens on trial and error at this point when I can just cover it with a backwards cap or something. We'll see. If I do decide to give this a whirl, and I get acceptable results, I'll let everyone know will share my insights. Thanks for the feedback, folks! Wes
