I've been looking at people in SL (in detail), and there is a lot of clothing that is only going to look perfect (or even -- somewhat decent -- as the case may be) if worn on a correct enough shape. I always notice unaligned or deformed straps (or other lines), bras/tops covering extra skin under the tits if the shape doesn't have huge tits, etc., and also the fact that any clothing over an ass (e.g. an untucked shirt) goes inside the ass (very unsightly). The same goes for animations (e.g., putting my hands inside of my body since I don't have body builder shoulders, nor do I want to have them in a second life).
So I thought of creating a standard set of shapes, and making clothing in different sizes for the different shapes. For untucked shirts and the like, there could be a prim or two that goes over the ass so that you didn't appear to have pushed the shirt inside. For certain bikini tops or whatever, there could be a prim strap between the cups instead of a V painted between them. All kinds of prim enhancements (or general attachments) that require no adjustments since it's made in a particular size for a particular shape variety.
If I made (1) a shape machine that gives you free shapes based on your measurement choices, (2) free specialized vendors for selling clothing in different sizes, and (3) a bunch of clothing items myself in all available sizes, do you think that anyone else would follow along? Also, I'd like to know if anyone else has already done or discussed something like this.

It sounds like a good idea, but the thing is, the shape also includes your face. And I for one, worked HARD on getting my face the way I like it. And also, to have a shape just like everyone elses? No thanks. It's why SL gave you all this customizability. I mean, if we all looked alike, then we could just go and play WoW. I get what you mean though, as I am a clothing designer. I'm full figured (compared to most of SL) and I have to make 2 sizes of prim skirts usually for them to fit the skinnies. And heaven forbid I buy something I like from someone else...none of their prim attachments EVER fit me. Lol...that's why I decided to make my own. Anyway, my two cents. I say go for it. I'm sure there will be lots of people who'll buy, there always is. Have a good day- Elle74

Thanks for the input. Forgot to mention though that there would be plenty of different shapes that would satisfy pretty much everyone (I would think). They would be free and copy/mod/trans, and changing the head wouldn't affect sizes beyond the head (and for someone who has a particular face made, you could copy down the values and re-enter them for the new shape). So you would just choose measurements for height, shoulders, chest, waist, and hips to get your "standard" shape (being advised that you should be 1' or more taller than your real self of course!). And you could tweak that shape a little without straying too far from your "sizes" I suppose.

I see what you are trying to do, but the problem is the fact that we have to use prims at all. Its wonderful that we can all look different. Yet what we need is a system to actually detect and adjust the clothes to our unique size. Is that what you are trying to do. It doesn't sound like it. Nevertheless, thanks for trying. Oh one more thought. I would like to see more offline tools, because My system can't run SL with an Graphic design program and can barely run with Firefox (its because of the requirement to get a decent SL experience. If I camp, I could work on other stuff. But why would I want to camp?)

That is another possibility I considered and should have addressed originally. One could create a machine to determine people's sizes. It would require more work from them than simply clicking a "get size" button, since there's no way for the system to detect it (aside from avatar height). It would just involve adjusting some virtual tailor tapes, perhaps, to match the shape. So add to the list (4) make a free tailor measurement machine to determine sizes of existing shapes.
