I think I know the answer to this already, but...
Is there a way to build a one-prim Octahedron? More than that, would it be possible to then "stretch" it in the direction of each opposite vertices? So that you end up with (sorry, bear with me) a tall spike balancing on one tip, say 8 units high (from the bottom to top vertex), 3 units wide (from left to right vertex), and 1 unit deep (from the front to back vertex)?
I know it can be done easily with two prims, but I wonder if something so simple could be done with one.

Oh I know I should.. but in this case it's actually for a detailed decorative ceremonial jewelry that, if I use multiple prims, I would end up with 31 prims or so just for the headdress part, and maybe another 30 for the rest of the jewelry. I'm just trying to be as nice to SL as possible

As far as I know, an octahedron can't be done with just one prim. It would require a profile cut to put a corner along the horizontal center line, and that can't be done with cubes, unfortunately. Also, it would require being able to taper the top and bottom to zero on both the X and Y axes, and that can't be done either. Unless someone's got some funky mojo of which my little brain is unaware, 2 prims is the least amount for this shape.
As for the 31-prims concern, unless you're gonna be applying physics to the object, you don't need to worry about it, just so you know.

Assuming of course that it's fairly small - which being jewelery probably is, wouldn't a texture do?

I'm pretty sure a 1 prim regular octahedron is impossible.
