Hi, I'm a bit of a texturing beginner and I've been playing with the Linden animated flame texture. I was wondering whether it is possible to get this separately so I can apply it to prims other than the basic flat box it comes on, as it's multiple textures.

Great, thanks! But will this work only on a flattened cube?

An animated texture is an animated texture. It will work the same way no matter to what shaped object it happens to be applied. Flat planes are the most practical choice in most applications, but you can use any shape you want.

Just give it a try.

Thanks, I will.
Because I didn't have the original texture and script, I was changing the shape of the flattened box and that wasn't working. Now I do have the texture and script separately, so we'll see .... Human Torch here we come!

That's gonna be pretty difficult with that particular texture. It only shows a single flame. I wouldn't use it for anything that requires an object to be covered in flames, especially a shape as complicated as a human body. You'd need to use an incredible amount of prims to have enough flames to cover the body realistically, and even then you'd have problems as the body moves.

Real flames always rise upwards. If your arm were actually on fire, and you lowered it to your side, the flames would flow upwards from your hand to your shoulder. If you then extended your arm outward horizontally, the flames would rise from all points on your arm equally. Texture animation will not be able to do both of those things for you. It's always gonna be one of the other. You'll have flames dancing around, of course, but not in any realistic correlation with gravity as you move around.

I might suggest instead using particles. Lots of very good Human Torch avatars have been made that way. Particle flames will respond to gravity, wind, and movement, for a much more realistic result. I believe certain particle functions are broken at the moment, but you should still be able to make it work.

Good advice Chosen. I'm working on both. Trouble is that 'prim' flames are so much better looking and more dramatic than any of the particle flames I've been able to generate so far (and I've converted lord knows how many flame photos into textures for this experiment).
