I got this version of Gimp and i have tried the tutorials on how to design clothing, but the tutorials seem to be in a different version, i can't find any of the palettes that the tutorials mention. If anyone is willing to help me out and teach me the basics of where to find these palettes and things that seem to be missing or different then the ones they use on the tutorials. I have found it hard to find the layers, channels, paths palettes and also the ones that are normally found in the toolbox.
I NEED HELP!!!

If you know how to use GIMP 2.4 you will know how to use 2.6. The lay out of the interface is a little different but all the features of 2.4 are there. Look in the dialogues menu to add or remove whatever you want. Take a look at Amazon.com and search for a book titled "Beginning GIMP from Novice to Professional" by Akkana Peck. The book is centered around 2.4 but the author's style of writing is very easy to follow and she encourages experimenting.....you'll find the tools, filters, etc mentioned in the tutorials she gives in the book. You also might go back to the GIMP download site and download the manual. It's a separate download and does not get loaded with the program download. Have fun.....it's not as hard as everyone says it is.

I don't recall which version introduced the big interface change because I don't use Gimp much but from my limited exposure I'd say the new way is much more conventional and thus likely to be found easier to use than the old way. So, you would probably want to stick with learning how to use the new version.
However, I think you can still download the older versions that match the tutorials you mentioned, if you want.

2.4 was the big change. Most tutorials I've read are pretty old and are using 2.1 or .2. The biggest difference I've seen with the 2.6 vs 2.4 is that the main GIMP window for opening files is not perminately docked over another dialogue window.......which frees up desktop space for another dialogue for use with the image window. The main window disappears once you open your file......reappears when you close that file.
I like the change a lot.......now I don't have to have dialogues shrunk down to almost nothing or partially hidden behind my image window.

also all dialogs are in 2.6 placed under a menu-selection: Windows | dockable dialogs | ... The perhaps worst 'feature' in gimp is the "default language choice". unless you are english you are pretty mutch sunk in respect to use any books /tutorials since no menuitem /dialogs are named like expected :/ so not good.. but the gimp team are looking into this as i understand..
