Merging Text to Texture in CS2

Hi all, just a quick question I'm hoping someone can answer because my Google search is getting me nowhere after 3 days of trying to find it.

In Photoshop 7.0 if I wanted to merge a texture onto some text, I would first type out the text in my desired font, drag the texture from another image into the first one for a new layer, position and CTRL-G. This would result in the texture putting itself right on top of the text in its shape with everything else cut out and I could tweak as necessary.

Now when I go to do that in CS2 it simply groups them. What am I doing wrong? Please help, because this is how I like to make fun signs and I'm starting to pull my hair out.

Thank you in advance!

Hi!

What you are doing is making a Clipping Mask. To do it in CS2, just add the Option/alt key to your Command/ctrl G. :D

So, you would type your words, then drag the texture on top of them, make sure the texture layer is selected, and type alt+ctrl+G on a PC, or Option+Command+G on a Mac.

(They had to make the change, because you can select multiple layers in CS and CS2.)

Hope this helps!

*shriek* I love you Robin! Beautiful beautiful. Thank you so much, I think my hair might actually make it through the night now. The change makes sense, and I can't wait to really delve in and play with all the new features.

When I do drawings I'd been using Alias Sketchbook because of the flexibility of layers, but this whole grouping thing has me squirming in anticipation.

Thanks again, it most definitely did help!
