So I've searched the forums and can't find an answer. My question is what is the best technique for creating textures for things other than clothing. I want to make textures for things like buildings and furniture on my own. I know there is photoshop but I'm looking for something thats free.

A free graphics program commonly used for SL purposes is Gimp, found at http://www.gimp.org/. Some random texture tutorial sites can be found at http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/Gimp/Textures-and-Patterns/1, http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Tileable_Textures/, http://www.gimp-tutorials.com/category/Gimp-Textures-11-1.html, and http://www.pixel2life.com/tutorials/gimp/textures_patterns_and_tiles/.

Hope that helps!

Textures are textures. It doesn't make any difference what you use them for. You're creating images.

There can be no such thing as a "best technique for creating textures". You might as well ask what's the best technique for making food, or what's the best technique for traveling, or what's the best technique for playing music. The questions as worded are much too vague to answer. They need specifics.

"What's the best technique for grilling a hamburger" can be answered, but just "what's the best technique for making food" cannot.

"What's the best technique for traveling from your front door to your mailbox" can be answered (walking), but "what's the best technique for traveling" in general cannot.

"What's the best technique for playing Purple Haze on the guitar" can be answered, but "what's the best technique for playing music" cannot.

By the same token, something like "what's the best technique for texturing this new chair I just made, so it looks like it's made of oak" could be answered, but just "what's the best technique for making textures" cannot.

Ask a specific question, and I'll be happy to give a specific answer. :)

i take whatever im working on, scale it down, color each area something different and attach it to my hud, now you have a snapshot of the object at perfect right angles you can then map out in paint to do things like borders on a odd shaped floor or whatnot
