I have followed step by step the machinimatrix video for creating sculptie texture maps several times, and have so far been unsuccesful. When I load the file into photoshop all I see is a grid, but no image of my sculptie. What am I missing here?

I am not sure but I am thinking that the Sculptie texture you are createing (once applied to a Prim) only manipulates the shape of that prim.
After you have done this, you must then apply a regular texture to that prim to give it texture.
However the grid you have spoken about confuses me, because I would think at least it would have the default Plywood texture on it already.

I apologize, perhaps my terminology is incorrect. This is what I am attempting:

I have created a sculpty using blender. I have the sculpt map (TGA file) which is applied to a prim in order to define its shape. This I can do pretty well.

Now I would like to create a custom texture for this sculptie. So I go back into Blender, and attempt to create a texture map for the sculptie using the methods described by the video (unwrap UV, and the steps after)

However, after finishing the steps described in the video, all that I get when opening the file in photoshop is a grid. I was expecting at least a grid with the sculpty shape as well, so that I would be able to create textures which would align with the appropriate spots on the sculptie when finished.

I hope I have made my purpose clear, it is sometimes difficult on forums to convey the meaning of a question, but I do appreciate your help all the same.

Basically I am asking, using blender, how do I go about creating custom textures for my sculpties. And thanks again

I think you are actually saving the grid pattern.
Once you have applied the texture materials to your object, are you baking it to the UV map?
Once baked, you will see the texture in the UV window. goto Image save as to save it.

If it complains about no image, go back to the Multires panel and "Apply Multires" and bake again.

Im usually wrong.. Someone help the poor dude.

There a 3 basic ways of texturing sculpties with Blender, 2 i would consider 100% Blender solutions, the third is an external edit like you are talking about (I think). Assuming you have a good sculptie:

1. Baking materials. Simply add a new material to your model, use the default grey shader material to test it out. Make sure you have a light on the same layer. Add an image to the UV (512px+) Then in the Scene menu, find the 'bake' tab. Either use 'Full Render" or textures to get started.

2. Texture painting .. this is a very easy mode in Blender to paint directly onto the 3d model. Menu is in the edit buttons, or paint properties. Set up an new image or use the one you just baked

3.Photo-swapping.. create a grid pattern in your favorite 2d application, when you have your object in edit mode, click image-open in the uv editor window.. then reload it should appear on your model for previewing.

Look me up in world, I have lots of experience helping people with these concepts. Self paced tutorials are available, As well I am starting another round of courses soon with SLLC.. (my neighbours at Learning Pond sim)

Problem Creating Textures for Sculpties
11-14-2008 17:56
I am having the same problem Quincy Ultsch describes above in post #3.

I'm using the video tutorial at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sw8Dt90V88&feature=related

and:

Blender Version 2.48a

I've managed to get to the point of savingthe UV Texture Layout and everything is fine until I load the file (that I just saved) into Photshop. All I get is a blank grid.

I've followed the tutorial several times with the same result.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
