I truly do adore the work that others have put into making templates. Truly. However, I got hooked on vector UV maps some time ago and they are hard to let go of. When turned on, they will stay 1px on your screen no matter what the zoom factor is. They also size up/down really nice without the interpolation problems of rastor. As such, I whipped out PSDPathUnwrapper and did the female model. Update and rename: SL_VectorTemplate.zipExtract the PSD file. Open it up in Photoshop. Take a gander in the Paths palette. Do what you will with it. One of these days I'll get the gumption to do the male as well. edit: Um, I think I put in an extra cut in the crotch. This is the deformation line where the leg meets the lower abdomen. I'm pretty sure the extra cut is in there and I'm pretty sure it's the proper deformation crease.

Very nice, Abu. Thanks for sharing this You won't have any need to do the male avatar. Both male and female use the same mesh and the same UVW's. They're just different morphs of the same mesh. Any idea what polygons the two rectangular patches at the top of the head belong to? I don't think those should be there.

Same mesh? Makes sense. I guess I was hoping for a different mesh with slightly modified UVW to compensate for slightly different... areas of stretching. Wishful thinking, eh?
Those rectangles are the eyebrows. I haven't looked into how the eyebrows are handled, so I haven't bothered hacking them out just yet. Shame on me for being so sloppy.
I also noticed a minor problem with the neck/collar area. Currently using Robin's template and the neck seems to be present in both the head and torso templates. Right now I believe I have the neck attached to the head. Maybe I missed something in the geometry.
I'll do some cleaning up and some detective work in the next day or two.

OMG. Those aren't eyebrows, but the missing collar pieces. I'm mostly a smart guy, but I'll be the first to admit when I'm an idiot. This is one of those times. I'm an idiot. Eyebrows - what was I thinking?
Back in a day or two with proper stuff.

What a great idea, Abu! Now why didn't I think of that? But if you have my templates, PS CS2, and Illustrator, you're doing more work than you have to. Just unlock the Smart Object, and double click on it to open it in Illustrator. Then Select All, Copy, return to PS and Paste, choosing "as Paths" from the dialog. You can get both the Vertices and the Subdivided Vertices that way. I'll put the Paths in the 3 files you can download from my site as soon as I get a chance; probably tomorrow, (giving you credit for the idea, of course.) In the meantime, if you want to post a file here, using the Map and SubD map from my templates, please feel free.

I don't do Illy and I'm not yet familiar with Smart Objects. I'll get to these things one of these days. At least, get to Smart Objects one of these days. For those that don't know, check out this feature of Ghost Painter by Cebas: Unwrap to PathExcept I used PSDPathUnwrapper by the folks that at RPManager. Update and rename: SL_VectorTemplate.zipTake the idea and run with it, Robin, Chip, or whomever. I'm happy with what I've got (even without sub-d), but if you want to do a bang-up job with real whiz-bang, go for it. However, I'm not exactly sure how ya'll did the sub-d. Did you sub-d and then rastor? If you want me to sub-d the geometry and vector that in the same manner that I did the regular geometry, I'm willing. Just holler.

Am I don't something wrong? Or is this just a trick to find the real blondes? I unzipped the files and when I open them in PS they are just white 512X512 squares? ??? Jen, ** who knows she had too much water skiing, too much sun and too much to drink this weekend. But, didn’t think it was THAT much.**

Jennifer, the magic is in the Paths palette.
Window > Paths
You should see three different path sets: Head, Torso, and Legs. Turn one on, go back to Layers palette, and paint away. As you zoom in/out for detail work, the template paths will remain 1px. Kind of weird at first, but cool once you start getting the hang of it.

The only real problem I have with this Abu is that when i am making the shape of clothes (for the alpha) I make the shape with a path.
When I make a new path I lose the visual of the path you created. (hope that makes sense).
I've tried stroking your path and also filling it but I dont seem to be able to get a representation of your grid while I am making a path.

From: Abu Nasu For those that don't know, check out this feature of Ghost Painter by Cebas: Unwrap to PathGhostPainter is great. It's what I use for 3d paint. The Unwrap to Path and PSD Manager are nice utilities that come with it. If anyone considers purchasing it (and it's well worth the price IMO) be aware that it's main function is as a bridge between 3ds Max and Photoshop. It's not useful without them. It's also best for a dual monitor setup. It allows you to paint in a viewport in max and it recreates the strokes on the image in Photoshop. In order to work the portion of the image you're painting on has to be visible on screen in photoshop. It's possible to use it on a single monitor by putting photoshop into a max viewport, but it's a bit of a pain to use that way. All in all a great plugin.

I just purchased ghostpainter and was curious as to how to get it to work in the same window as 3dmax. I see a video preview and thats why i bought it but can't seem to get it to work. When i start it, it starts PS in a different window. Any suggestions?

Right click the viewport label of the viewport you want Photoshop in. Under the views menu you'll find a submenu named "extended." Photoshop will be a selection under extended. And congrats on getting GP. I love it.
