Photoshop Question - 'slicing' image?

I can't remember if that's the correct term - anyway, I have one large, square image. I want to make it into 64 separate files, in a grid. So the 64 different images would make up the one large image. Isn't there an easy way to do this in Photoshop - I think I remember doing it when making images for web use.

Thanks!

Hosie - Where's my avie, hmmmm?

Actually, I think Illustrator is better suited to that task. It's been a long time since I've spliced images, though. Best of luck!

I can't answer you about the slices because I've never used them, but you could set up a grid every 64 pixels (the grid settings are under Edit>Preferences), ensure you have Rulers viewable (View>Rulers), Set Snap To Grid and Snap to Guides (also under View), and drag guides out from the rulers every 64 pixels along the grid... then you can select each block and paste each one into a new document and save the bits. I've used that for web work rather than slices. I like things precise, and I'm used to guides from layout software. :)

Hmm, ImageReady(Which comes with most versions of PS) uses slices for breaking down images - If you have ImageReady open it up and use the slice tool to seperate your image into pieces, then you should be able to export it as a webpage - and then it will save each slice as a seperate image.

If you just have Photoshop, assuming you are breaking it into 64 equal pieces, I would just take the a new image 1/8th the size and width of your original image - fill this smaller image with black, select all, and then paste it as a new layer on your original larger image. Move that black block/mask we made into the upper corner, using the magic wand tool select that block and then switch back to the larger image layer. Then choose edit> copy, open a new image and paste it in - there's your first piece. Then just take our black block/mask and move it over to the next piece, and repeat the process. There is probably a faster or more efficient way to do this, this was the first that came to mind and what I'd probably do.

Are you trying to make an animated texture?

Use this to create your "montage"- http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php

(Newer versions of PS have slices also, you don't need to use ImageReady but you can.)

I used to use slices all the time when I was doing web work. They're convenient because you can save all your images out in one shot. The only problem is, you only have the option to save as .jpg; .tga isn't an option. If that's ok with you, go for it.

I would suggest setting up a grid, like Alaska said. Then with the slice tool selected, drag/snap along each grid square to create your slices.

Then select File/Save for web...
In the screen that comes up, you might as well set quality to maximum in the dropdown on the right.
Click the Save button. A dialog box will come up.
At the top, select the folder to save into.
Set Save As Type to Images only. Set Slices to All Slices.
To keep it simple, you can leave Settings set to Default.
Click the Save button.
This will result in a subfolder called images that contains filename_01.jpg, filename_02.jpg etc.

I hope this helps!

Ummm, I wouldn't bother with making a grid, and all of that.

Just get the Slice Tool, right click (or Control+click on a Mac with a one-button mouse,) and choose Divide Slice from the contextual menu. (Since the image is currently a single slice, you don't need to make any slices first.)

Then enter the number of horizontal and vertical slices you want, and it's done.

But, as Fallingwater said, they will be saved as .jpg. So are you sure that you want to do this? May I ask what your end goal is?

Yes, Photoshop does slicing. I'm on a computer that doesn't have it installed, or I'd walk you though it. Did you think to hit F1 and typing in "slicing" while using Photoshop?

Robin, I'm glad you added that! I thought there might be a quicker way to slice but it's been a while.
