In all likelihood it is a conflict with some other piece of software running on your computer, or even a driver, such as the driver for your graphics card. Did you update some other piece of software or other recently? If so, try rolling that back to the previous version and see if that helps. It would probably be something that runs a process in the background, such as those things that sit in your system tray.

Hey there!

pmfji, but I have CS2 as well running in a Vista laptop. I don't have a crashing problem like the OP, but have a problem with the document window disappearing while I'm working on something. Kind of annoying really. Have to close PS and open again.

I tried searching around, but haven't seen anything on this. Any chance anyone else run into this and found a way to fix it?

Sasha, try doing a 'restore' from a couple days ago, it possible could be an XP update or some other update that installed that is causing the problem. Also, if you have a spyware program run it, and check your 'windows defender' see if it finds anything.

If formatting didn't work, the next thing I would do is test the memory. Especially if anything else is crashing or other funny things happening.

There are programs out that can scan and do other things to memory, but I don't completely trust them. The only reliable way that I know for testing memory is to swap out the sticks and see what happens.

But I haven't really done this kind of hardware work in quite some time (few years). Maybe something new or other tricks have are available.

edit:

Wait, before you go popping the case, look around for full diagnostic tools. I used to have one of these on a boot disc and it did a pretty good job of helping ferreting out hardware issues. Can't remember the name of it unfortunately.

For some good tools along the lines of what Abu was talking about, check out MemTest and Ultimate Boot CD.

if you have plugins u're installing with photoshop could be one of them is corrupted, i've had problems with ps 8 crashing but was cuz of plugins that weren't compatable with my version, if its crashing with a clean install could be your cd drive skipping data...seems unlikely tho, or a bad spot on your harddrive...just throwing out suggestions to think about. since u've reformatted and it still doesn't help did u buy a version for a mac instead of the pc version?
