Testify!

I use the GIMP (the GNU Image Manipulation Program) on Linux, but there is also a Windows version available. It's free, open source software, with most of the same features as Photoshop.

I also recommend The GIMP Essential Reference, and Grokking the GIMP, both from New Riders Press.

Hehe, yes, it is used.
I find it handles alpha a lot better than the 'ahem' alternatives... lol.

Got no space left to add a new group though. But good luck.

I use gimp. It's powerful, free and fast download.

It does pretty much the same stuff as Photoshop so Photoshop tutorials and manuals apply also to gimp.

I love the GIMP. I got used to it on Linux, and found out I even prefer the Windows version to Photoshop. Most likely due to familiarity.

I like the way it handles alphas a lot better. I don't end up with those white lines around the pattern. I also just find it simpler, though again that could be due to being used to it.
