Question on saving as tga

I made an image, starting with a transparent layer, added what I wanted, made a composite layer, saved selection & confirmed the alpha channel, and then ran the flaming pear filter on the composite.

Problem is, when I go to edit, save as .tga on the composite layer, I have no option to save as a .tga, or jpeg or bmp for that matter. Those options just seem to be missing.

I am using CS2, any ideas?

Sounds like you did everything right. There's no need to start with a transparent layer though, just so you know. Layer transparency won't affect the final image transparency in any way. All the transparency data is in the alpha channel.

I assume your use of the word "edit" here was a typo? You meant "File->Save as...", not "Edit->Save as...", right? I'm also not sure what you mean by "on the composite layer" in this context, but no big deal.

There are two likely reasons for those file format options to be missing. The less likely of the two would be that your saver utilities for those formats got deleted somehow. Check your Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins\File Formats folder. You should see, among others, Targa.8BI and BMP.8BI. I'm not sure where the JPEG saver is stored, sorry. If those files are missing, you won't be able to save in those formats. The fix would be either to copy them manually from your Photoshop CD or to just reinstall Photoshop.

The more likely reason is you're not working in RGB mode. BMP and TGA are screen-only formats, so if you're in CMYK mode (color space for print), they won't appear as options. If you're in LAB mode, then BMP, TGA, and JPEG will all be missing. To solve the problem, go Image -> Mode -> RGB Color.

Hello Chosen,
I confirmed I am using RGB at 16 bits(trying to switch to 32 bit RGB asks me to flatten layers), and the files you mentioned are present in the plugins/file types folder.

The composite layer I mentioned is the result of holding shift/alt/ and ctrl keys and tapping E.

I then turn off all other layers, except the composite, the go to file/save as, but nada

I used PS7.1 before and allways did it this way, but was alerted by the program it had to to save as a copy, since the image not being flattened. I don't even get that option with CS2.

I even tried to flatten the image to see if that worked, but nada as well.

EDIT: I tried to view some of the .tga files I made in PS7.1 and all open as just a white box

My bad. I should have mentioned the bits per channel thing. That's your problem right there. Set it to 8, not 16, and you should be good to go.

With very few exceptions, most image formats are designed for 8 bits per channel. If you've got it set to 16, all you're probably seeing a options are PSD, PSB, PDF, RAW, and TIFF.
