I am sure this is going to sound like a ridiculous question, but I can't figure it out...

I created an image, using File | New. But, I forgot to make the background transparent. So, do I have to start all over, or is there a way to modify my existing image to make the background transparent?

TIA!

You can select the parts you want to be transparent, and then Edit>Clear that selection. Turn off other layers to see that it worked.

There are various tools to help you select the unwanted parts, such as Quick Mask, Fuzzy Select, Select by Color, Scissors, and Paths.

Be sure to work on a duplicated layer, so you don't wreck the original.

Do you mean when you forget to set the background as transparent when first creating the image? If so "Layer - Transparency - Add Alpha Channel" is what you need.

You should also look at the masking features as these are great for working with semi transparent textures. Unlike a pure alpha channel, the mask lets you work on the transparency without affecting the base image. "Layer - Mask - Add Layer Mask" will get you started on those.
