Before I begin the tutorials on designing clothes, could someone tell me if the Photoshop I have is sufficient or do I need to buy another version before I get started here.

I have Photoshop 5.0 LE....

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

LE, that was the predecessor to Elements, right? That's going back.

You might have some issues trying to use it. I'm not sure if it can do transparency, for example. Try following the Photoshop Elements tutorial in the Transparency Guide at the top of this forum, and see if it works. If it does, you should be okay. If not, get a modern program (which I'd recommend you do anyway).

Gimp

You can also try using GIMP which is open source and free to download here: http://www.gimp.org/. I believe it's up to par with photoshop 7.
When you are going through the tutorials and photoshop is being used just use gimp instead. When you come upon something that doesn't seem to apply to GIMP and you need it just do a google search of the photoshop action you are trying to do and the word "GIMP"
Such as "alpha channels" "GIMP". You find out how to do it in GIMP from a forum or an online tutorial.
That's how I intend to do it and so far for my webmastering I've gotten all my answers that way and am using GIMP as my only photo imaging program.
Hopefully, there will be a tutorial on GIMP and SL design soon. Or perhaps when I learn a bit more I'll offer a class in world.

Good luck and have fun!

Grokking the GIMP

http://gimp-savvy.com/BOOK/

I would start with this. The offical documentation is really not that useful - it teaches you waht the buttons and menus are but not how to really use them in more than a cursory manner.

I grabbed a copy of GIMO as well. Now that I'm familiar with it, I find it to be much easier and quicker to maneuver than Photoshop.

Have fun!

There's a plugin for GIMP called GIMPshop that alters the user interface to more closely resemble Photoshop's. Using it might make following tutorials written for PS a little easier in the GIMP.

Rose, yes you can :-)

There are a few things GIMP can't handle yet that are natural for Photoshop, such as extensive CMYK functionality and other things that are normally of interest only to professional graphics artists, but for everyone else GIMP is just as powerful as Photoshop for what you would use it for in Second Life.

Just wanted to chime in:

If you have a laptop, GIMP works very well on Laptops as far as I can tell, where as Photoshop requires more "oomph" than most laptops can supply.

I like to use GIMP on my Laptop when I'm not home, and Photoshop on the Desktop when I'm home
