I was fiddling around in PS trying to make a basic skin that I can work off of and when I thought I had created a perfect skin, I applied it to the actual avatar and the texturing looked more painted than realistic. Is there some sorta super secret that transforms that painted look into a realistic skin texture?

Hi Pistacia :) Here's a fun exercise you can try that I think will help you answer your own question. Find a good photograph that has nice skin. Crop it down to a small section of skin and then examine it closely. Notice how there are almost no areas larger than a pixel or two that are the same color. Try to recreate it with the paint tools in a new document. When you have something you think is pretty good, copy it and paste it as a new layer over the photo. Then turn the layer on and off to help you visualize how they differ. Usually the thing that keeps painted skins from looking realistic is texture rather than color. Things like pores, blemishes, variations in hue, the way light scatters on skin and illuminates it from within, and so on. Skin is loaded with texture and is almost never a contiguous color. It's the small details that can make the difference between skin that looks real and skin that looks flat and lifeless.

How do i get BLACK eyelashes on my skins?
10-29-2006 15:51
I am trying my hand at skins too and thank Chips for his tip there about skin texture.

One thing that has me totally fuddled tho is how to make the eyelashes black?

Im making drow skins presently, blue dark elf ones and though their eyeslashes are white like their hair it is disconcerting to find that when i colour the eye area black or shaded as for makeup, i get white eyelashes that look like they are gummed up and with a bad case of some dreaded conjunctivitis or something.

I have tried various things including shading black right up and i still get this horrid white ring of gummed up lashes. Im bushed, really and need help. Think it is just some tiny thing that i've overlooked.

The skins i love and wear and bought all have black eyelashes, so there is something i am missing. Please can someone help with that elusive trick on how to make the eyelashes the way i want?

The upper right hand corner of the head texture is reserved for eyelashes. This being so, you have to make it transparent--alpha channel it to be invisible in that corner. To see how big the corner needs to be, look in the Second Life Character folder, at the head_color.tga file. Have fun!
