I hope this turns out to be a silly question with a simple answer. Every skirt I make has an enormous waistline that floats around my avatar's middle, whether I make the skirt tight fitting or poofy. I keep all skirts slim fitting to minimize the effect, but once in a while I would like one to flare out. How do I get the waist of a skirt to actually fit snuggly around an avie's middle? I'm using Photoshop 8.0. I appreciate any suggestions.

You don't.
Waistline is a slider that unfortunatly doesn't really exist.
If your wearing a shirt though, you can make it a li'l bit poofy. That tends to hide the fact that the skirt mesh sticks out a bit. But it always will stick out a bit.

Does your skirt fabric go all the way to the top of the template? Or are you trying to make a low-rise waist on the skirt?
The skirt only attaches high up on the waist of your av - if you try and make it ride lower on the hips, you'll get a gap.

Try making yourself an alternate bodyshape just for wearing skirts. I've found if I take my my butt down to 0 & maybe even adjusting hips, etc.. makes for a much better skirt fit! SL skirt template seems to prefer the ultra skinny model types. heh

Yay for Ella!
Ella Rockwell made that skirt and yes, it's a prim skirt (the next big thing!).

This is a "clothing" skirt -- there is a tiny gap, usually - but not much.

There is a huge problem with skirts in sl. It seems like every skirt option is "too" something. Prim skirts are either too wide, too stiff, too short, too prone to cut through your body with anims. Clothing-layer skirts are too gappy when low waisted, too high waisted when not gappy, too ass-fattening, too prone to distort the texture and/or cut through your body with anims.
Kudos to all the clothing creators who do thier best with many brilliant tricks to try to get around these issues- they are doing the best they can with an imperfect toolset.
As someone who has never taken "you just cant do a skirt here" as an answer even before slider skirts were an option, the best advice I can think of is this:
If you want to wear a skirt, investigate the options and pick whichever of these issues you mind *least*. But DONT cease asking for better options. It might be possible on the linden end to improve the skirt mesh to the point that it doesnt have this poofy gapping issue. The skirt mesh is WELL over a year old, and had not had any significant improvements made to it (at least not in this area) since it was introduced. If its not possible for them to improve that aspect of the skirts, it would be nice to have a good solid reason as to why.

Thanks for all the input

I suppose I feel better knowing it wasn't anything I was doing wrong, but I'm still disappointed the skirt issue is so difficult. Will just have to work with what's available and make the best of it!
Thank you all for your replies!

Yes.. it brings up an interesting question.. why has such a simple mesh been neglected for so long? I made my first skirt yesterday and was appalled that I paid L$10 for the upload of the texture after seeing how the skirt mesh looks on the av. I was going to make a range of floral dresses with highlighted seams and so forth but even the slit_gaps don't work good enough to bother.
After seeing some of the prim-based dresses around, I find myself dissapointed in the skirt mesh even more and that to make any sales or even to give away skirts, would be a difficult thing to do.

the gap at the skirt is due because LL spared polygons on skirt so the skirt border cannot seam with the body (not same polygon number on the seamline)
