I dabbled in find, and I checked the SLX, but I can't find many particle textures.. Anyone know a place to get nice ones? The default one is just horrid for just about anything except pretty dots.

You can put any texture you like on to a particle. What are you trying to make? The basic rule of thumb, just like any other texture - you can try the various in-world shops (Textures R Us etc.), but you're probably best making them yourself out of world in GIMP, PS or PSP or similar.

I'm like various kinda of mists and differently shaped dots, I know that I can use any texture, but a particle needs a nice alpha softening around the edges to work properly, and it is just beyond my skills considering I don't want to crack PS, and I can't get gimp to make sense. o.x;

In your own inventory, specifically in Library->Textures->Waterfalls->Particle System, you have several interesting textures that are made for doing waterfalls with mist. Also included there is the script to use for it.

(If you would like to see a nice waterfall that uses that there is one on my land in Philudoria)

I agree with the previous post, there are some good misty textures in the library, which is often overlooked.

You don't need to crack PS for this. If you've got it, this might be a wonderful way to start getting into PS in fact - it's a nice project which covers a small amount of what PS can do, but all the elements of which will stand you in good stead for further texture design.

The real experts out there (Robin, Chosen, Nam, et al (sorry to anyone I've missed, it's hot and late here is my only excuse)) that graciously share their skills and tips with us are a really great resource. My PS have come on in leaps and bounds since joining SL, simply in terms of having a need for something specific and so going to make it - and reading this forum and asking for help here too. I still can't make nice clothes, I don't have that combination of the eye, the desire and the time to dedicate to it, but signs, tattoos, walls, plants etc. I can all do fairly confidently.

It's a good skill to have for SL, and not a bad one for RL too, even if you never become a graphic designer.

I have used those, because they are better than the default. But the are not especially good for anything but waterfalls..

The mist texture is fine for fog and even small puffs of smoke when sized correctly. Textures-R-Us has some nice particle textures that you can buy from the single vendor (2nd floor last I looked). Also has them over in sci-fi section I believe. Jopsy Pendragon has some for sale as well on his land. Lots of others have them as well.

Oh, and while at Jopsy's land, check out the particle laboratory...
