Newbie Question about Clothing Permissions

I'm very new to this, so I apologize if this subject has been addressed--I was unable to find anything specifically regarding this in the three pages of posts now in this area of the forum.

I am selling some articles of clothing in my little shop. At the moment, the permissions are set to modify, no copy no transfer. However, some of my customers wish to purchase the items as gifts.

I am unable to set the permissions to "resell/give away" without also checking the "copy" box. Is it possible for me to allow a person to give the item away without also being able to copy it?

First, for clothing, I'd always recommend granting copy permission. Without it, people can't make multiple outfits with the same article of clothing.

Anyway, it shouldn't be that you have to turn on transfer and copy together. It should always be one or the other or both. You can't turn off, but can always turn just one or both on.

As for gifting, I'd recommend selling via SLboutique. It's free, and there's a "buy for friend" option on every item. Just put up a sign in your shop instructing people to visit your page at slboutique.com for gift purchases. Check the site yourself for instructions on how to get set up.

There are other options, if course, like you could issue gift certificates, or you could hand-deliver gift items that people have paid for, but either of those things requires you to be inworld to handle it. In my experience, SLboutique is the easiest way to go.

Hi, me again :)
I've been playing with the permissions options.. and I'm still having trouble with the "Transfer" option. The default on the clothing I make is that the "Transfer" option is greyed out, but checked. Does this mean my clothing is transferable?

I am only able to get the Transfer box to un-grey by checking the "Copy" option. Then I can use the "Transfer" box, but if at any time I uncheck the "Copy" option, the Transfer button reverts to the default... greyed out, but checked.

So. I'm a little confused. Is my clothing transferable? And if so, how do I change that?

Hi Arielle! Yes, as long as that box is grayed out and checked, your clothing is transferable.

It's grayed out because the Lindens, for whatever reason, have decided that everything must be either transferable or copyable (or both.) By default, it's all transferrable.

When you check the Copy box, the Transfer becomes un-grayed because you can now, if you so choose, make stuff no-transfer.

I recommend that you do that. Click the Copy box, to make the clothing copyable, and uncheck the Transfer box, so it becomes no-transfer. That's the way most clothing in SL is sold, as Chosen mentions, so that people can use the clothing in Outfits.

If your clothing is Modifiable, then having Copy enabled means that the owner can save variations he/she creates, which is also a really nice thing to be able to do.

Hope this helps!

Aha! That makes total sense. Thank you so much for clearing that up for me.

I'd argue it's most clothes are sold copy, no transfer.

I guess it depends on where you shop, but very few of the clothes I have are copy, no transfer, they tend to be transfer, no copy.

Personally I find this preferable, but preferences do vary, widely.

One thing I would say, make it clear what the settings are. I had a bad day buying copy, no transfer clothes for a friend's present, fortunately I liked the outfit myself and wore it. OK, it was my own stupidity, not reading the information in the box properly, but it's easily done.
