Hey all, I just made my first alpha texture in Photoshop 9, and SL is not accepting the alpha channel - it just replaces it with an opaque white. I tryed TGA 16, 24 and 32 bit, without RLE compression, with the same result for all three. Is anyone else having this problem? ==Chris

I'm still using 7.01 but I've heard from others that in CS it doesn't create the alpha channel automatically on save like it does in 7. Try doing all your work in layers above the background layer. When you're done, merge all your work layers and turn off the background layer. Do a "load selection" of the transparency on the top layer and then do a "save selection." That will create a new channel. If you don't have any other saved selections that will give that transparency as an alpha channel. If you do have other saved selections, delete them from the channels palette.

As a quick suggestion, are you sure the alpha mask isn't "flipped?" Try inverting the color values for the alpha and see if it uploads properly.

As Chip said, you need to have a separate Alpha channel, which you can see in the Channels palette. White pixels will be opaque, and black will be transparent. Anything in between will be in between, of course. This can really catch you if you are used to a version of Photoshop that made the Alpha automatically. That ability was removed, because a lot of us old control freaks didn't like it.  The reason we didn't is that you wind up with white halos around all of your objects, since pixels that are partially transparent are interpreted as if they were against a white background. So they are partly transparent, and partly pastel or white. Using a separate alpha channel makes it very simple to put the object on a background that has colors which match the object colors. Which means the partial transparency is partly transparent, and partly the colors you want it to be. If you want to see how to do this, I have a tutorial on my site here. Hope this helps!
