Hey everyone, I was wondering if someone might be able to point me in the direction of a tutorial for shoe making. I have seen the prim shoes, and they are very cool. But i would really like to try my hand (err foot) at the built in shoes The only problem i have run into is that they seem smushed in a pretty weird ( although im sure perfectly logical) way. So any help at all is very much appreciated Thank you all in advance.

I recommend getting really drunk first.
The feet seem to be the nexus of your avatar, where all lines come together and normal laws of texturing no longer hold true. Some level of blurring is unavoidable, especially around the ankles where a single row of pixels seem to get stretched a bit too far. You may find it helpful to redesign your shoe so that blurry areas feature a solid color rather than detail.
I would start by creating a pair of shoes using Chip Midnight's wireframe texture so you can see where the lines fall on your feet. Then in PS or PSP draw the outline of your shoe's details over his template while looking at the grid lines on your AV. Don't worry about making the lines look nice, just make sure they fall in the right place on the shoe and that all the seams line up. After a few trial and error uploads, and a couple of glasses of Chardonnay you will have a template for your shoe. You can then fill in the textures and shading without going between PS and SL all the time.
Sorry this isn't a magic bullet solution, but it's the technique I use just prior to throwing my mouse across the room and starting a prim shoe project.

Shoes are terrible and I don't think wine is strong enough. I suggest Vodka.

yes. vodka. straight. maybe a nice belvedere.
the nicest texture shoes i have seen in SL were at a place called the Shoebox. I was quite impressed with the artist's ability to work within the current limitations.
that said, i still think prims are the only way to go and actually have something on your feet that looks like a shoe...

Are you making a really big shoe first then shrinking it to fit your foot? Thats what most people do when making small stuff, start off with it the size of a dog then shrink it.

Also, if you are determined to make texture shoes, don't feel like you should be trapped in ONLY using textures. A cleverly placed prim here and there can add a lot. Here is an example from the *PREEN* collection where prims enhance a pair of texture boots:

Not exactly texture-related, but at least shoe-related... if you have prims attached to your feet, do you walk on the prims, or do they sink below the ground like other attached prims do? If the latter... how do you avoid that? I'm curious. And darn those are nice moccasins. If I didn't have paws, I'd buy a pair.

Yeah, they sink into the ground but their are two ways to get around this. The first is to make an animation where you walk above ground and attach it to the shoes. The second is to shape your feet like the shoes using the appearence -> shoes bars then to hide your flesh using those textures that hide avatar but not objects.

Ahh, interesting. Thanks Kasandra. I try to avoid custom animations, myself; I looked at Poser's interface once, and was hospitalized for severe cerebral haemorraging.

Oh its not that bad (coming from the person that makes the worst animations ever) if someone walks you through it once it will be like Paint.
