I have a horrible feeling there isn't a good answer to this, but I'm hoping there is.

I'm trying to make something from a rectangular image (a flag for example) that's wrapped around a leg or arm as a trouser leg or sleeve. One way would be to cheat and paint it on as a rectangle and apologise for the missing pixels... but that's not satisfactory really.

Of course the outline of a leg is kind of perverse, kinks for knees etc... I was trying warp, but that won't let me nicely distort the shape in and down and out off it's grid. Is there a way of doing this short of slicing the original shape up and distorting each slice to the right sort of shape?

The only way I know to do it that would actually be quick would be to use a 3D modeling program, and do a cylindrical projection onto the leg or arm surface. That would take just a few minutes to achieve.

Any method of doing it strictly in 2D is going to be time consuming. I might suggest cutting the flag in half (for front and back) and then using the liquefy filter to pinch, pull, and shape it to the leg contours. It'll probably take some trial and error to get it right.

Thanks Chosen.

I figured learning the tools for 3D projection would take longer... not sure, but liquefy is doing the job slowly and painfully.

Tip for anyone else foolish enough to do this... BIG brush sizes are good.

Not sure if this is of any help Eloise, but here's the link to a question about warping and shaping I had a while ago (funny, I called my thread the same thing lol)

I hope it helps out :) And if not, or if I misunderstood the question, sorry about that...

Ah, I'd actually seen that one and hoped is was my answer, but sadly no... I will admit to stealing the name! (Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery and all.)

Paths and smart objects are great for rectangles to curves but I need the thing to dip in (and out and shake it all about) to get the right outline on the uv map whilst not losing the image contents. Liquefy lets me do that because it lets me controllably (well sort of) reshape. Thanks for the link though it's on my list of timesavers.
