TShirt Templates purchased on SLEX

I've purchased a t'shirt template for the jacket layer on SLEX or whatever it's called these days. I'm sick of my belly button showing. They've of course been delivered to me in world. They look right in world, on an invisible .tga background, however when I "save texture as" (.tga) to my hard drive, they don't look so right in my paintshop pro. The only option I get is .tga.... For one, they are no longer targa's with invisible backgrounds...more even the bottom part of the t'shirt (on jacket layer) has extra junk in it and I can't seem to select only that part of it that I need.

Am I doing something wrong here? Is there a step to buying a template from slex and getting it properly uploaded and useable for my paint program that I've missed?

It's cheaper (free, in fact) to use Robin Wood's excellent T-shirt template at http://www.robinwood.com/Catalog/Technical/SL-Tuts/SLTutSet.html. That's the template that a lot of people use for their first clothing project in SL. She has the alpha channel all finished, so all you have to do is replace her sample logo with your own beautiful one, turn off the template layers, and upload the file to SL. It's a snap, and a good confidence builder. While you are at Robin's web site, take a look at her excellent tutorial on alpha channels, BTW. It will help you move on from T-shirts to more challenging projects of your own design.

Note added in afterthought: You mentioned the jacket layer.... You are always free to use an upper body clothing texture on any layer you choose. Most people would use the shirt layer for a T-shirt, but it might make more sense sometimes to make a T-shirt on the undershirt layer or the jacket layer. It's totally up to you.

Oh yes yes, thank you! I know of Robin's template, I've used it and love it very much! But I need a longer t'shirt. Which entails creating an additional upload just for that little bottom part that makes it longer. I suppose I could do a tutorial on shading so that I could create and match up the folds and creases in the shirt. That's my only problem with that template. I've promised myself to learn clothing, and folds and creases are a large part of the learning process. I've learned prim skirts :)

/me kicks herself for paying for a template...but since I did, I would still like to learn how to get it properly uploaded and useable.

Hmmm... That's more of a challenge than you might suspect. Robin's T-shirt template takes full advantage of the length of the upper body, as defined in the avatar templates that are the standard for SL clothing. To make a longer T-shirt, you need to design it as a jacket layer. That means creating a texture on a portion of the avatar lower body to append to what she (or you) have created for the upper body. You will indeed need to learn how to do enough texturing of folds and shadows to make the transition between the upper and lower parts of the T-shirt look smooth in world.

It's possible that the template you bought on SLExchange is actually designed as a jacket-length shirt. If so, you may have lucked out. Study it carefully to see how the designer got folds and shadows to align. You can learn from her/his example. I suspect, though, that your purchased template won't create a T-shirt that is any longer than Robin's. .... Sorry.

to make a longer Tshirt, use the Underware layer(as in the lower underwear, not the undershirt underware) in the same color as the shirt you want longer. it will tuck into your pants. Want a longer untucked shirt? Use the pants later and put your pants you'll wear on the udnerware later.

Easy as cake

Thank you Danielle :) I will be attempting this soon.

Also I want to update to add that the template that I had purchased has been fixed by it's creator who was very polite I might add. This is a template for the longer t'shirt on the jacket layer. The problem was uploading them from SL. It's really not doable for a template because you need the alphas. So the creator sent me the template in .png format in my email. Additionally, they are now fixed to where when purchased and they are delivered in world, there will now be a link in a notecard to where you can download the actual .png formatted template. Phew! And I was beginning to think that I was dumb like a rock!

Hehe now I will inundate my partner with gifts of grungy goodness.
