Ok, I'm a big noob here. I downloaded the skirt template and opened it up in Photoshop Elements 4.0 but dang if I know what the heck to do next. How do I upload back to the game after I've changed it?

Ok, I'm a big noob here. I downloaded the skirt template and opened it up in Photoshop Elements 4.0 but dang if I know what the heck to do next. How do I upload back to the game after I've changed it? Welcome to SL clothing design! You make the skirt image, fitting it to the template. If you have any parts that are transparent, such as the area beyond the defined hemline of a nice skirt, that transparent area needs to be masked off on an alpha chanel layer. Then save the image as 32-bit TGA, after making sure to hide the template guidelines. 512 x 512 is a normal texture upload size. 1024 x 1024 gets more detail, but rezzes slower. Over that size is wasted effort, it will scale smaller when you import it. In-world, select 'Upload a texture' from the File menu. It costs L$10 to do this, paid after the upload completes. The texture ends up in your Textures inventory folder. Right click your avatar, select appearance, and put on a new skirt. There's a square for the skirt texture. Click that square, and select your new texture to apply it to the shirt. Do a save-as, name the skirt, and save it. Good luck! |

Just a couple of additional notes... PS Elements doesn't support alpha channels so you'll only be able to do a full length skirt without any transparency. If that's the only paint program you have available to you then you might want to download GIMP which is an excellent open source paint program. I'd also recommend the GimpShop plugin which gives it an interface similar to Photoshop's. Also, 1024x1024 is more detail than you need for clothing or skin textures. The additional detail generally isn't worth the extra texture load lag they create. 512x512 is recommended.

Robin Sojourner discovered that while PSE cannot dispay alpha channels, it can still manufacture them. In my transparency guide, stickied at the top of this forum, is a tutorial explaining how to do it. It's verified to work for PSE 3, but there seems to be some dispute over whether it works in version 4. I haven't had time to install 4 yet to test it myself. _____________________
