How would one design textures for a torus?
Just a plain old donut shaped torus, nothing fancy or twisted, skewed, etc.
The specific thing I have in mind is creating a surface texture for a torus shaped planet.

Hey Suzanne. The way a torus behaves texture-wise is pretty much just like a cylinder. It's just that this particular cylinder has been bent around so that the top touches the bottom. Think of it like making a donut in RL. You start by rolling the dough into a long cylinder, and then you bend that cylinder into a circle to make the donut shape.
If that verbal description is hard to follow, or even if it's not, I'd recommend you grab Robin's test pattern and throw it on a torus to see exactly how the texture wraps. Take a look at where the various parts of the canvas end up on the object, and then use the same test pattern as a template when making your texture in Photoshop. I hope that helps. Happy texturing. _____________________
