Some of you probably already know about this, since the news is about a year old, but this is a product that was discontinued by the company and released as freeware. (They now sell a different version of it.) I downloaded it a while ago and just got around to installing it. It's complicated (I had a bunch of "now, why is that resulting in that?" moments while using it today) but good, and it works as a plugin or a standalone application.

Oh, and it's a graphics editing program, in case that wasn't clear, with (as far as I can tell) an emphasis on mimicing paint. Sort of like Art Rage, except with less glitter and more intimidating professional tools.

Good heads up. Yeah, this is old news, but still probably a lot of people don't know about it, so it was good of you to repeat it.

If you want my 2 cents, I love Deep Paint. Been using it for about a year now. It's worth noting that it works as a stand alone app or as a Photoshop plugin.

And yes, it's mean to mimic natural media, just as you said. From paint to charcoal to ink to different kinds of paper and canvas, it does a nice job of mimicking lots of materials. It really shines if you've got a tablet.

I've been told Deep Paint is not quite as good as Painter, but since I don't have Painter, I can't really comment on that. For the money, there's certainly no cause to complain about Deep Paint. Great program.

I maintain a rather long list of free or time-unlimited software that might be of interest: http://boards.core77.com/viewtopic.php?t=3171

Is there some rule that the awsomeness of graphics software must be linked inversely to the ease of use of the interface?

It sure seems that way, most of the time. Bryce vs. Vue, for example.

Power is inversely proportional to friendliness. That's why so many powerful people are a$$holes.
