Is it possible to design an object into the shape of an octagon? I mean as a regular object, not as some part of a building. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what you mean by "regular object". If you mean can you make an octagon out of just one primitive, the answer is no. Typically, it takes at least three. You can link the 3 prims together though, so the octagon will be one object, even though it's got 3 parts to it.
If you're hellbent on using just one prim, you can fake it with a texture. You could put a picture of an octagon on a transparent background, and then when you apply the image to a prim as a texture, the prim will just show the opaque shape, not the transparent background. It will be completely flat, without any depth to it, but it will be a one-prim octagon.
