When I wear lipstick in RL there will be times when I want a fuller look and extend the lipstick line beyond the vermillion, but much of the time I want the lipstick to stop exactly at the vermillion border. That's no problem in real life.
In Second Life when the lipstick goes just barely all the way across the lips horizontally it sticks above the vermillion in the middle, putting a red area in the philtrum that looks like it rose up there through capillary action. If you move the slider back to where the lipstick just reaches the vermillion border vertically there is an unlipsticked area on the side of the lips.
What does one do about this other than use the monitor power switch or wear a hat with a brim that hangs down below the chin?

Well, you could always build an avatar template with lipstick painted on. Of course...as a male, I have no idea what "verm...verm..."..whatever is . Unfortunately there are some imperfections in the way things look on avatars with the basic set-ups and the only real work-around is custom avatar skins. (If anyone else knows a way around, I'd like to know).

You have to remember to colour just a smidge inside the line or you get the same effect even on a custom skin makeup. .

Correct, and because the problem exists on the template it starts with the lip shape. That first has to be modified, then the lipstick. If you map the lipstick alpha over the lip alpha, the problem is glaringly evident. The lipstick alpha is much larger than the lip alpha with a completely different shape around the entire outline of the lips (see attached image with lips in red and the lipstick alpha in grey scale). Furthermore, the lips are lopsided, which causes bleed on the visual left of the lips. I certainly do not want to dictate the standard, but my personal preference is to have a much more defined and symmetrical lip line. As it stands now, the lip alpha goes way beyond just antialiasing the edges, well into blurring the image. The lipstick alpha is entirely a different problem becuse it is designed to offer partial coverage on a sliding scale. This is certainly not how I would apply lipstick in RL. My concern is much more about the defining edge and density of the lipstick. My redesign solution for the default lipstick would be to use almost the same exact alpha for both lips and lipstick (giving the lipstick a slightly fuzzier edge for the slider bleed) and use a density scale, just like the eyebrows have. Ultimately, the Lindens will have to address this, and they will if enough people make a fuss about it. In the mean time, I will continue to design my own lips on my skins, and lipstick to match them.
