The first thing you'll want to do is to get familiar with your graphics program. Read the manual. Do every tutorial for it you can find. If you don't already have a good working knowledge of your paint program you'll find trying to do clothing very frustrating. Take it one step at a time. There really aren't any shortcuts. The good news is that PSP and Photoshop aren't very difficult to learn, but it will take a lot of practice. When you feel comfortable with PSP then tackle making clothing. It's fairly simple really. Study the clothing templates so you understand how they wrap around the avatar body. Make a skin out of the templates and wear it on your avatar. Take screenshots for reference. That will let you see exactly what part of the template ends up on what part of the avatar. Once you understand that it all comes back to how well you can use PSP. Don't be put off. Learning a paint program can be a lot of fun. Just don't expect to be making stuff you'll want to sell for quite a while. You'll just set yourself up for a lot of frustration. The important thing is to have fun! Search this forum also. There's tons of useful tips and tricks here, but you'll need to at least be familiar with the basics of PSP before you can do much else.

Psp can be just as good as PS.. if you know the ins and outs of the program. Its just user prefrence. Psp can also be more user friendly (again user pref). I'd suggest either trying ut PS.. or a lower version of psp. You can also find tons upon tons of tutorials online to do anything in psp, or ps.. hunt some down, and just play with them, they really help you learn the ways of the programs.

I can vouch for the method of playing around with your paint program, with the tutorials given at their website as well as any tuturials you can find relating to SL clothing online. That's how I learned. It can be frustrating at first. However, I had never opened up a paint program before beginning to play SL not two months ago and I already have the simpler techniques figured out. The ones that allow me to create my own style of clothing. *\o/*

As you go, you will find more and more shortcuts and hint/tips that will help quicken the pace for you. Just be patient with yourself as you learn. Take notes if you need to. But most of all, have a blast! The painstaking time you spend in the beginning will pay off once you see your first original creation in-game :D

btw..i learned with the free trial of PSP X. It took me awhile to get familiar and comfortable with it. I did a lot of internet searches for help. I finally had to buy the actual paint program when the trial ended...$40 on ebay :)

Hi Frost. Welcome to the world of clothing in SL. :)

I second what Chip said. Learn your paint program first. I wouldn't recommend trying to make clothing until you're confident and competent with your software.

If PSP is your program of choice, there are lots of tutorials available for it, but nowehere near as many as there are for Photoshop. If you've already bought PSP, fine. It's not a bad program, and it will suit your needs for SL.

However, if you only downloaded the trial, I'd recommend Photoshop or GIMP over PSP. They're both more powerful. Photoshop is the industry standard, so you'll find more tutorial information available for it than just about any program on Earth. If you can afford it, it's worth every penny. If you'd rather not spend the money, the GIMP with the GIMPshop plug-in is totally free, and almost as good. Most Photoshop tutorials will work with GIMPshop.

Anyway, I don't want to bum you out if you already spent money on PSP. As I said, it's not a bad program, and it will do what you need it to do just fine. The other 2 just happen to be more powerful and a bit easier to learn on your own since there's so much more tutorial information available. Beyond that, there's nothing wrong with PSP.

The important thing is that whichever of the 3 you choose, you learn it well. How long that will take will depend on you. Some people take to it right away, and some people struggle a bit at first. Eventually everyone gets it though. It's not rocket science. As Chip said, read the manual, follow the Getting Started tutorials that come with the program, and follow as many online tutorials as you can find. Then practice, practice, practice.

Once you feel you're comfortable with the program, then read the Fashion Design: Using Templates guide that comes with the SL templates. It's easy to follow, but it assumes basic knowledge of Photoshop or PSP. If yuo have that knowledge, you should be able to grasp the concepts in the guide pretty quickly. Then come back here and ask as many specific questions as you can think of. Many of us are always here to help.

Good luck, and have fun with it.

Ravyn,

You shouldn't feel bad, the devs were being tricksy and disguised the file, so anyone might miss it. Just download the zip package of templates at: http://secondlife.com/downloads/fashion/All_Fashion_Design_Templates.zip

The pdf file is actually part of the zip package (along with the template files).

Good luck!

I agree with everyone else about learning your program first - If you decide to stick with PSP, I wrote up a tutorial for the mechanics of how I make clothes in it a few days ago... It's not a very GOOD tutorial, and it doesn't really cover anything about the actual drawing part, but it might be useful for you to translate photoshop terms into PSP ^_^

/109/bc/90540/1.html

Incidentally, if nothing else that's an argument for photoshop - I use PSP5 because I got it free on a magazine, but if I were to buy some software I'd go for photoshop, simply because more tutorials and things you find online will be for it. PSP can do most of the same stuff, but it can be tricky sometimes to work out exactly how PSP does it differently.

Good luck whatever you decide though! ^_^
