I have been designing clothing for a while now.. and while im not all that great, i enjoy what i do. For the longest time i had been working off of the default SL templates. Recently, i started playing with the CFF templates that are available and i noticed that they are twice as big as the SL ones.

Is it better to use the higher-resolution tempates for clothing? Obviously it would provide more crisp appearances.. but is this change the appearance notably? As well, is it worth the increased amount of rez time? Is there an 'industry standard' for this sort of thing?

The CFF templates are large in order to be able to show relatively thinner UV lines, and to lessen the margin for error with things like seam matching. The larger the template, the less of an impact it has if you're off by a pixel or two in your precision. Many high quality skin makers will tell you they use a 2048x2048 canvas or larger.

Whatever the size of your working PSD is, always shrink the exported TGA to 512x512 before uploading to SL.
