I don't know of an open source program similar to Poser. However, The GIMP is an open source photo editor similar to Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. You can download it at http://www.gimp.org. I have not found it to be as easy to use as either Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. I think it is every bit as powerful, but it has a non-intuitive user interface. I think there are some tutorials linked off the website that may help.

Zeph as a recent newbie myself I struggled with Photoshop 7 for months before I was able to do anything with it. Once I had the right guidance using Photoshop 7 was a walk in the park. The guidance I had was from this forum actually and here is the link to it:

/109/02/12684/1.html

This tutorial will work with pretty much any photoshop program and is very helpful. Just read through the SL tutorial and the one that I posted. Play around and you should be up and running in no time. As far as Poser. The only info is mostly for Poser 5 and there isn't a lot of info on it at the moment since creating animations is a new thing.

I will do whatever I can to help so make more posts if you have any more questions.

It's probably much more complicated, but with some work you can get blender and the python script, all free mind you, to export .bvh files.

Again you'll actually have to construct the mesh (it doesn't have to be complex at all, just block represending the rather limited parts you can animate in SL, ie no face movements or phalangies)

you can get blender at www.blender.org (it's a free fully featured 3d modeler/renderer) and you can find the script at:
http://www.centralsource.com/blender/bvh/files.htm

It's not easy, but it is very free and probably good for your brain.

BTW, I just remembered that you may not be able to export the files with this method... but it's a starting spot. I'm sure someone here with python scrip/blender skills can make a good plugin.
