You hit the nail on the head right there. Yes, you can absolutely make your avatar look like the character in that picture, or anything else you want. It's just a question of learning how.

As I said in your other thread, forget about Max, and all other third-party modeling tools, for now. Spend a few weeks learning SL's built-in tool set. It's a little different from what you're used to, but there's almost nothing you can't do with it, if you're patient enough to learn it properly.

That helmet, for example, is nothing more than a collection of spheres and cubes, when you break it down to its primitive elements. And that's exactly how you need to think of it in SL. With adequate knowledge of good SL building techniques, you could model a helmet like that in about 10 minutes. Texturing will take longer, of course, but the principle modeling on something like that is really, really simple.

Go to a sandbox or some other place where you are allowed to build. Click the BUILD button at the bottom of your screen or right click on the ground and select CREATE. Your cursor will turn into a wand and your EDIT window will open. Click the ground and a cube prim, the simplest building block in SL, will appear. Explore the edit functions on the variuos pages of your EDIT window. Try playing with all of the various functions to see what they do. See how you can change your cube.

When you have had enough of playing, or when you have finally gotten frustrated enough, visit the Ivory Tower of Prim (Search for it with your SEARCH function). They have all the tutorials you will want for learning how to work the build tools. As you have questions, visit the Building Tips forum and ask. And have fun.

If you're feeling lazy:

This is very similar to an avatar called 'Massacre' which you can find at Boxed Heroes. The body parts are largely sculpted although they are a blood-red colour. The fin-like objects on the forearms are not dissimilar to another av called 'He-bat', I think, which is sold at the same shop. The items are mod/copy and the prices are pretty reasonable.

You can probably manage a roughly similar look with a little bit of mixing and matching from both outfits.
