I've seen a lot of skins (the face in particular) where the user/creator of the skin has planted a face tattoo on their avatar alter how the avatar looks. In specific, whatever technique is being used creates a look that's a bit more realistic than what the Second Life editor can create, but still somewhat cartoon-ish. Kind of like in this picture... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3051/2750345552_0bb92d7100.jpg?v=0http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2065/2151278442_7c62b4d53f.jpghttp://wiki.secondlife.com/w/images/8/86/Moira_Seelowe_face.jpg(I've seen this done with male faces too, but alas, Google Image didn't help me) I've seen this kind of style used a lot. I assume it's done using Photoshop (or the like), but have been unable to duplicate it. Does anyone have any resources (tutorials, references, etc.) on how to create this stylized look?

Could you expand the question a little? I don't really have an answer to offer, but would like to understand what u r asking better. Do you refer to the make-up effects?

I think it has to do with know where to align a specific photo or texture on the avatar. I have experimented some with faces and skins but I found doing drawings or photos a whole lot harder to line up correctly on faces. Skin and face has to blend too or you get these weird lines around the neck. I haven't figured out what I am doing wrong. Photos look good. Although I did see something that reminds me of the Joker styled mouth which is common beginner look for some inexperienced with the UV. Eyes are separate thing, there is tutorials out there for those. Eye lashes I haven't figured out how to get them right, any more then how to do hair that looks natural and fits the head correctly. I suggest maybe you should hunt down Eloh Elliot's skins it has psd files you can get for free and do whatever but it shows you working layers i.e how the shine is made in photoshop, etc. I just haven't yet personally figured out all the details in the layers and bit overwhelmed because I am inexperienced with it so far when looking at them. But if you can study just one area of the layers or face it does give you frame of reference how shimmering eye shadows, lips are made.

It might also be the effect of lighting and Windlight environment settings. I have a few specific Environment profiles that I use for photography only, and they've turned out very well for me. (^_^) Have you had a chance to look at Eloh's Another skin PSDs? (o.o) They're a good base for any adventures in skin making. (^_^)y This is Re - Greed =^-^=

I think another problem with faces is all the changes that take place via sliders in the body shape. Even when you have a good template to work with in Photoshop it is made for the base object.
Your face in game has all those adjustment such as nose, cheeks, eyes, chin, etc., that stretch and distorts the skin in a way that is different form the model worked on when you created your face skin.
