Shiny mirrored / metallic texture?

Does anyone know where to find that stuff that looks like a mirror? It literally moves and reflects light when you look at it from different angles. Is that just a texture, or something more than that?

Thanks to anyone who can locate it for me!

Are you referring to the shininess setting under your texture tab just under the color swatch? Low shininess makes nice polished wood. High shininess makes an almost mirror effect- but it's not a true mirror. It just shows some of the sky color I think.

Yes, Weston, thank you! It was right there in front of me and I hadn't noticed it.

I don't suppose SL supports reflection maps...does it? I'm pretty sure the answer is no but it would be nice ;)

Hey Avion - I am the owner/operator of several mirror stores named MirrorMirror (search keywords "mirror mirror". I have been researching and studying "working mirror", reflective mirror and illusion mirror technology. I've worked with script writers and finally started editing scripts to make them work dependably. I am in constant pursuit of creating the perfect mirror and will continue tweaking the scripts until I have the most dependable and "life-like" mirrors in SL.

I have prototypes available for viewing (pun), and will be introducing new products regularly.

Main store: Carmine 11, 235, 241
Shop: Butzbach 162, 223,2 4
Shop: WORLD Mall 137, 93, 23
Shop: Cheswick Village 44, 109, 24
Shop: Phyllira 104, 119, 91
Kiosk: (no MagicMirror on display) Outeniqua 146, 115, 67

Oh, and I have built a "clothes changing booth" with a full-length mirror for rental to malls and shops.

If you have any questions or ideas, please contact me.

Actually, it does, if you set RenderDynamicReflections = TRUE in the Debug Settings (Client menu). A "shiny" surface will then reflect it's surroundings (though not avatars). It doesn't work well in Windlight, though.

Wow! I'll have to give this a try and see if I can merge the two technologies. Thanks Dylan!

I've seen some pretty creative use of image textures, for instance.. In windows along one side of a street, reflecting the image on the other side.. very clever and not widely done.
oh but that is not a mirror..
although not perfect... a mirror with perhaps a script to capture the avatars profile image.. that would be neat. or one that projects the inner ruth in us all. keep us humble

How does this mirror work then?

This picture was taken at a photo booth where the reflection changed with the av and the pose. Was wondering how the mirror effect was done?

I just created an illusion mirror (I know not what you are looking for) which basically all it does is turn the camera around to look back at the avatar as though you were looking in the mirror

as for an actual reflection in SL, I don't think they have done that yet

not sure how that photo booth is done

where was that pic taken?
I would love to go see it

When I realized many months later that it was not that easy to create a reflection I went back to the place where the photo was taken to see who made the photo booth and find out how they did it. Unfortunately the land had been sold and it was gone. (:

It was really neat. Every time the photographer clicked the poser, the av changed the pose and reflection changed to match it.

Dina, did that photographer thing work with just any old avatar who happened by, or was there one specific avatar there the whole time? If it's the latter, then it's likely there were actually two identical-looking avatars, both "sitting" on the poser object. In that case, the floor would be semi-transparent, and there would be an upside-down version of the same room as above built below it. The avatar below the floor would be "seated" upside down, and posed exactly opposite the one above.

That actually wouldn't be very hard to set up. All you'd need would be a couple of alts, the "mirrored" room set-up, and two copies of every outfit you want to photograph.

If it worked with just anyone, then I'd guess it was the same basic trick, but with some sort of copybot av sitting under the floor. In that case it would have been illegal, which could explain why the photographer is no longer there.

Either way, it wouldn't have been a real mirror. With the exception of the aforementioned renderDynamicReflection debug setting, which you would have to activate deliberately on your own, and which doesn't really work all that well to begin with, SL has never had any ability to produce mirrors, ever. Whenever you see anything that looks to the contrary, it's always a trick. The "mirror" object isn't actually reflective; it's translucent or transparent, and placed between two different copies of the "reflected" object(s).

The reflection worked with anyone. I tried it with my av and my clothes as well and it worked just fine.

I'm guessing it must have been a copybot type of thing then. As I said, that's a no-no (for good reason), so that would likely explain, at least partially, why it's no longer there.

That was it's primary function, yes.

ouch never thought of the copybot thing

I wish SL would implement mirrors true mirrors (but then my pc and laptop prolly would not be able to handle it heh)

I thought we had mirror capability a year ago, but it wasn't that great.
