Any tricks on seams and texture scaling?

I'm learning to build clothes using Gimp. I can now create a shirt or pants even with nice wrinkles and seams.

The only problem is, if I do a nice looking seam (using a dashed line stroke along a path) it looks fine in 1024x1024 previev in SLCP or Blender but then I have to scale it down to 512x512 and the seam gets messed up.

Is there any tip or trick that you'd like to share what's best to get a convincing seam in 512x512? I have tried the different scaling methods that Gimp offers but they all don't look very good. Would it be better to add the seams after scaling down to 512x512? I tried that and find the seam is then looking too thick, even if I use a 1 pixel line.

Quite a while ago, Robin Sojurner (Woods) posted a very useful technique for making realistic stitching. I have been using it ever since, and it's wonderful. Her instructions are all in Photoshop terminology, but the technique itself could be adapted easily to GIMP or another graphics program. Take a look at
