Photoshop cannot do 3D simulations. It's a raster editor, and that's it. It's strictly 2D.

For 3D stuff, you need a 3D application. To view your clothing & skin textures on the avatar model, first go to the downloads section of this site, and grab the avatar mannequin files, which you'll find come in Poser and OBJ formats, and open them in an appropriate program. The Poser models can be viewed in Poser or DAZ Studio. Tho OBJ's can be viewed in just about any 3D application (Maya, Max, Lightwave, Blender, Deep Paint 3D, Body Paint, Tattoo, etc.). The specific method to apply textures in each program will be different, so be sure to read the instructions for whichever one you're using.

Just be aware that the mannequin files are the base models (no slider settings applied). They won't look like YOUR specific avatar. If you want to preview a texture on your own av, there's a little hack you can do. You can temporarily replace the color TGA files in your SecondLife\Caracter folder on your hard drive with the clothing/skin you're currently working on (those files determine the avatar's "naked" appearance). Then when you go into appearance mode in SL, and take off your existing clothing and skin, you'll see the new images on your av. Just be sure when you exit appearance mode that you don't hit save, and remember to change those TGA files back to the originals when you're done.

That's all Photoshop in that video, sure. It's also not 3D. Unless there's some kind of magical hoodoo going on that I've never seen or heard of before, all that the guy in the video was working with were a bunch of 2D pictures. He showed a screenshot of an avatar, then the template, then walked through the tutorial for applying some shading. Next, he showed a picture of an avatar with the UV map showing, then showed how the lines on it are the same as the lines on the UV map on the template, and again walked through a tutorial for how to apply some rudimentary shading effects.

There was no 3D there whatsoever. Those avatars you saw were just screenshots, not actual 3D viewings.
