I am interested in building some 1 prim appliances for my house in sl. I know that normal textures such as those for walls, rugs, floors, etc.. are either done in PS or PSP, but where can I find the textures for things like stoves, frigs, washers and dryers, etc....Where do they come from? I know that you can buy they from creators in SL but where do they get them....I want to find different ones and upload those I like...can anyone help?

I always assume people would either scanned them out of catalogs or off of web sites. It is either that or they photographed their own appliances with a digital camera and edited the images inside of PS. This would ensure that your pictures of applicances at the right angles.

Speaking as a texture designer, I usually either make such stuff from scratch, in Photoshop, or take my trusty 35mm camera and make pics of similar appliances or items, and then Photoshop the photos to do what I need.

Catalog pics are rarely at the needed angles, but some people do use them, certainly.

To avoid legal issues and make it truly my own texture, I would only photosource specific details, like knobs and heating elements, from a variety of makes and models, and then would 'build' my own version in Photoshop.

If you do want to purchase them in world, I think there are a few texture stores that sell them. I always start at Textures Unlimited, but there are a few others I'll check if I can't find what I am looking for there (that's VERY rare)...Just do a search in find for Textures.

Hi Noel!

*Insert shameless commercial plug*

Try Textures R Us. Buckler/195/230 . Haven't checked the inventory yet, but they have a huge texture selection. And it's going to get much better, very soon, if I have anything to say about it, since I'm starting to work with them as staff texture artist. We do custom textures to order, as well, so if you don't see what you need, just ask!

If you are making items for your own personal use (not for resale), and you don't posess the Photoshop Kung-Fu to create images from scratch, I would suggest checking out Google Image search:

www.google.com - click the "Images" link at the top.

For example, I did a search on: Stove

A bunch of images came up that could probably be cropped, and likely turned into a realistic looking 1-prim stove in SL.

However, if you are planning on selling the items you create, I wouldn't suggest using google image search, as most of those images are copywrited by others.

Hope this helps! :)

i have moved this thread from General t5o Design & Textures, as it fits better here AND should provide more help in this matter.

-

i would also like to suggest trying some sites that have textures you can use for free:

Mayang's Free Textures

Absolute Background Textures Archive

both of those sites offer a large amount of textures to choose from in a bunch of different categories. for the second link, make sure to notice the pull down menus at the top right of the page.

hopefully these will help! :D
