Last week, I was quite happily uploading textures at 840x840, just a resolution I happen to have been working with on a project.
Now, since the last update, when I upload them SL has resized them to 512x512. Is this a new feature, or have I hit a switch somewhere by accident?
Thanks,
F x

Videocards only handle textures with power of two dimensions. So like 64x64, 128x128, 256x256, and 512x512. If SL wasn't resizing the images on upload before then the extra size was just wasting bandwidth, because it would certainly be resized by the client anyway. Even if SL weren't resizing your images, you should size them correctly.

Ah, so if I go back to 1024x1024 I'll be OK?

Well that'll upload with no resizing of the image, but "ok" is a relative term here. That's a huge image, fine for texturing an object that'll fill up the entire screen, but overkill for anything less than that. I would strongly suggest shrinking the image down to 512 yourself and uploading that way to see how it looks.

I really don't know why anyone would want a texture sized anthing other than 512 x 512 (max). Since I use Chip Midnight's templates which are 1024 x 1024 (makes it nice for details during the making of textures) I initially save to that resolution for future use but resize to 512 or smaller for uploads. Well I couple times I forgot to resize and mistakenly uploaded at 1024. Aside from the slightly longer time to upload when it came time to use the texture on any object it was harder to get it all lined up on the prim itself. Fiddling with repeats per face and offsets unnessasarily is such a pain.

From: Peggy Paperdoll I really don't know why anyone would want a texture sized anthing other than 512 x 512 (max). Sometimes you may want to do rectangular textures. 128x1024 for example, for animations and such. Actually, the 2048 limit shouldn't have been removed for this reason, but it was being abused.

I personally use 256 x 256. There are alot of people who have older video cards that suffer under huge loads. And honestly unless someone is using the build camera zoom, they aren't going to see that detail even if it is clothing.

Thanks,
F x The same exact thing has happened to me even in beta also ! All my 1024 textures even ones I uploaded in the past have shrunk when I open them and look the same size as my 512 though it clearly states on the bottom its a 1024 ,but when I sent one, my friend saw it large. You all are misisng the point, this shrinking of large detailed images didnt used to happen. Its not important whether or not its a good idea to use a large texture, its that it shouldnt be shrinking in size when I open it ... I dont use large sizes that often but when I do I want to see it full sized. I wish I could do something about it . Elinah
