Greetings All, My first time posting here I've been trying to open a .gif in Photoshop, it's a photo of a plant I found on a website. I'm new at this but have open other photo files I've captured from websites, this is the first time I've had this problem with a photo/pic from a website so not sure what's going on. Is it because it's a .gif? I have both Photoshop and PSP won't open in either program. I get the following message in PS; Can not open C:\Documents .....pi_21837.gif - because the file format module cannot parse the file. Would appreciate any suggestions or help with this problem, THX Arda ~*^*~ Arda's Home Decor Vista Grande Mall - Montara

weird. Maybe its a security deal from the website you got it from? Try saving it again maybe. I dont think .gif is supported in SL uploading, but PS ought to open it.

sounds like a corrupted or locked file somehow.
Ps and Psp can open them... SL you can't upload .gif
(EDIT) Actually.. Make sure the file extension matches the file type sometimes even if you saved it as 102299.gif the file type might be somthing not supported by PS or PSP.
Ummmm do you have PS 6.0 or less?
And try opening PS first then go open it thru there it may ask you to convert it to a proper format.

Two suggestions. Try changing the file extension to .jpg, and .png instead of .gif
What error does photoshop give you when you try and open it? Does it not open at all or is it blank? If it opens but isn't correct it may be an animated gif and what you want isn't on the first frame. Try opening it in Image Ready also.

Hi All, Thank you everyone for the suggestions really appreciate it. Sorry I haven't replied sooner but haven't been able to get into the forum lately. I've been checking everything. I'm aware that SL doesn't support .gif files. All I want to do is open the file at this point. The error message I get was in my first post. (Can not open C:\Documents .....pi_21837.gif - because the file format module cannot parse the file.) What does "file format module cannot PARSE the file" mean? Maybe there is a clue to my problem in that message, lol. Tried changing to .jpg and .png also checked if it's a security issue, wasn't that. I'm sure it's just my inexperience with Photo Shop and PSP that's the problems. The file will open when I browse with PS will appear in the little window of the program but nada in PSP. I use PSP 8 and PS 7 I'm searching the web using google and leaving messages in PS and PSP forums along with way, as well as Reading User Guides. It's now become a major challenge for me I will open the file!!! It's now my life's work. I learn the most from my mistakes anyway. I'm pretty sure it's me not doing something right.

From: someone Originally posted by Arda Fauna The error message I get was in my first post. (Can not open C:\Documents .....pi_21837.gif - because the file format module cannot parse the file.) What does "file format module cannot PARSE the file" mean? Maybe there is a clue to my problem in that message, lol. That message means one of three things... The file isn't actually a .gif file and has the wrong file extension The file is corrupt The file is a flavor of gif that PS can't open. My guess would be one of the first two reasons. You might try downloading the freeware program IrfanView. It opens a huge range of file formats. If it's a flavor of gif that PS can't handle there's a good chance IrfanView can. http://www.irfanview.com/

Awesome! Glad you got it to work Arda. IrfanView is definitely one of the best pieces of freeware out there. It's saved my ass more than once, hehe.

Word.
Used Irfanview for years -- it's on my top list of software to load the minute I get any new machines because they're so useful.
