Is there a hat/head/face object?

Stupid newbie question here, ...

but how do you make a clothing item that is worn on the head that is *not* prims?

I am thinking of masks mostly and I don't want to rip the skin off my head to wear one. Is is it possible?

The only way to do that, which I am aware of, is with a custom skin. Change the tattoo layer for the head part of the skin. That is how most high-end female skins change face makeup. For example, I own 3 copies of my favorite Human skin. One has no makeup, one has fairly subtle makeup, one is made up for a night out in the clubs. But each is a full custom skin.

Why do you want your mask not to be prims? It's only your second paragraph that makes me question this. You can either have skin or prims - the former *will* 'rip the skin off your head' the latter won't - it may remove your hair if it's worn on the same attachment point though. Wy don't you want a prim mask specifically?

A non-prim mask has to be a skin, and will replace your facial skin. A prim mask won't do the thing you're worrying about under any circumstances, it will be a seperate item totally to your skin which you can wear or remove without any other changes. Facial prims can be worn in a number of attachment places if they conflict with other attachments - i.e., a hat can be worn on the chin but repositioned so it doesn't remove prim hair (worn on the head) when you put it on.

I'm assuming you mean mask as in carnival mask sorta thing here - if not, apologies :)

I suspect they want to make one of those masks that conforms to the face. A 'domino mask' or 'Mardi Gras mask'. The oval shape that has eye holes and conforms over the bridge of the nose would be nigh unto impossible to make with prims in SL. Except as a skin.

Exactly, I am thinking of making a halloween costume that uses a mask that conforms to the face.

I find it kind of surprising that this is (apparently) impossible in Second Life. You can create an avatar face that has a mask as part of the face, but not a mask to put on your own face? The point being I am certainly skilled enough to make the mask but not skilled enough to paint a face that looks exactly like mine.

I mostly posted cause I just couldn't believe this was the case and was hoping I was just being ignorant, but OMG it's true!

If we *did* have this "head covering object," we could use it for false moustaches, scars, face paint, masks, yamulka's, weird head stubble and beanies that actually fit!

too bad. :(

A "head tattoo" layer has been on the list of things we've been asking about for an age or two.

There are gentle rumours of a "new avatar system" coming. Hopefully a layer for this is in that, but who knows for sure.

As Eloise mentions, there has been talk about adding more layers to the standard Avatar model, so the tattoos can be seperate from the skin itself, and so more layers of clothing can be used. But there is no target date bublished you for that becoming available. Certainly not before this Halloween!

The original SL Avatar concept pre-dates the idea of realistic skins being applied to the tattoo layer. It assumed you would use the default, mono-toned skin that is controlled by the appearance sliders, and that the tattoo layer would just be for things like moustaches and tattoos. But designers quickly found out that layer was useful for creating photorealistic and furry skins, and so now it's almost always fully used.

You could perhaps contact the designer of your skin and ask if they'd be willing to add a mask to it as a one-off. It's a bit of an assumption that they'd agree, but if you make the mask yourself they might be willing to add it to the face texture and sell you a no-transfer version. They'll know you have the original maskless skin and if you can't resell the masked version, then it's only you that'll be using it for your own costume.

It can't hurt to ask, anyway.
