actually PSP gives you many ways to save an alpha. You can do it your way, i.e. save a selection to alpha channel. Or you can create a new Mask layer. Thereare 3 different options for creating your mask. I find it easy to use a transparent background in the image. Then I hit new Mask -> choose source opacity. Then go to layers -> save mask to alpha channel.

You can see if you have an alpha channel by looking under Image (menu option). If you see "Delete alpha channel", then you have one. You can open up delete alpha channel to see what your alpha looks like.

Save as a 24 bit TGA. PSP does not offer 32 bit option, but the alpha is saved, don't worry.

Note: I use PSP 9; I can't speak to earlier versions

LOL is LL EVER going to sticky something on this?
