I'm trying to create some objects / avatars with fur but am starting with a clean slate and am not sure where to begin. How can I create a 'fur texture'?

I've been trying some of the same thing myself. I found a few tutorials on making fur/hair textures:

http://div.dyndns.org/EK/tutorial/froofy/
http://www.digitalmediadesigner.com/2003/08_aug/tutorials/pshair030825.htm

Searching "fur tutorial" or the like on Google will result in more help.

If you're starting even further back than that you're going to want to go to http://www.secondlife.com/ and in the upper right dropdown select "downloads". Download all of the template textures for the avatars which will help you when lining the textures up with the characters.

Also, if you want to see how the texture is looking, you can select File -> Upload Image, and preview it on the torso/legs/head without actually uploading it. Just make sure you hit "cancel" if you're not satisfied with the texture yet.

I cannot help you with texturing normal objects as I haven't tried that yet. You cannot create your own custom texture maps for them (like exists for the avatars), so I don't know how, say, a hollowed sphere will be mapped over using a square-shaped texture.

Don't know if this will help, but there's also other sites with lots of textures in .jpg or .gif format such as this one - try googling for sites with freebie textures. Or, if you have a digital camera, take a photo of fur or scan it, then change the color with a program like PS.

Also c-c-check this site out—it is MINT. Some very lush fur textures here:

I have a fave neutralwhite (works well recolored) fur texture inworld that Fleabite Beach gave to me many moons ago, let me know if you want me to drop it on y0 Inv.
