Hi, I have a (maybe) newbie question.
I want to hide the skin texture in the appearance editing screen. I'm making my skins in Photoshop.
There is a way to hide the skin texture?

What do you mean, exactly, by "hide the skin texture"? Please explain.

Hi
A friend tell me that the skins that she have bought, when you edit your appearance, don't show the textures in appearance skins, the squares where you select the skin texture is empty, but the texture appears in the avatar. She tell me to put that in the skins that I made, but I don't realize how to make that. All the skins that I have, the texture appears in the appearance screen. So, I want to know if this feature, to hide the texture in editing screens, really existis. I make it for sculpties, putting an alpha channel in the TGA file, the sculptie is ok, but you cannot see the texture used to make the sculptie. But for skin it don't work. |

You can't.
And even then, that's not what you have to worry about, no one can make a good skin from extrapolating that. The people who are going to steal your skin will run a separate program to take it off your hard drive. So it doesn't matter if the skin is no-mod, or hidden - they will get it anyway. _____________________

Your friend may have been thinking about sculpty textures. In the edit object dialog, sculpt textures show as their actual size and could be easily stolen by taking a screenshot. You can prevent them from showing by adding a fully transparent alpha channel to the texture. The alpha is ignored in sculpt textures, but it prevents it from showing up in the edit object dialog.

The people who are going to steal your skin will run a separate program to take it off your hard drive. Andeara, the only way to wear a skin without filling up the tattoo texture slots is to put the textures on the color layers in the client character folder on your hard drive. This involves overwriting existing TGA files there, and does not make the textures any safer from theft than the standard upload method. Those textures are still uploaded to the server, which is how other people get to see the skins. The only way to keep your textures 100% secure from would be copiers is to keep them locked up on a portable drive when you are not accessing them, and never upload them into SL. Highly impractical, since SL is what they are designed for. The other simple way to prevent the textures from being seen (in appearance) is to make the skin body part file/asset No Mod. It will only be visible to the creator. |
